Minimalist Challenge ACCEPTED!!
Do YOU have more THINGS then you have room for those THINGS?
That is a "brain twister", I know but just think about it for a moment. I am sure many of you, like ME, look at the space which you live in and wonder where to put things but never quite find the space. We have things which we have not used or even touched since we bought them months ago. Like a book from Oprah's book list, the latest fashion trend items which are not even our taste, and/or the shiny kitchen gadget we ordered from QVC late one night, we all have our individual weaknesses and we can't judge. But too many of us get roped into the idea that we need to have things to measure our happiness, wealth, and our lives all together. The reality is, THINGS are just that...THINGS, which we do not need and don't have the room for anyways.

The past year or two I have become very interested in the "tiny" living movement which is picking up speed across the country and across the world. For those of you who might not know, going "tiny" is the concept of getting rid of things and moving oneself into a smaller space, a few hundred square feet. Now for many this idea is unimaginable, drastic, crazy, and quite possibly CLAUSTROPHOBIC. While for others it is a freeing opportunity to declutter, provide financial freedom, allow for more traveling experience, and placing the VALUE on experiences instead of things. I LOVE THE IDEA!! I hope to go TINY as soon as the time is right but first I have to take the FIRST crucial step...DECLUTTER.
The idea of decluttering is freeing as well as daunting but I'm ready for it. Are you ready?! Well the path I am going to take is known as the 30 Day Minimalist Challenge. There are few different variations of this challenge(links listed below), the first on the list is the one I am following as it is simple. During the month of October which starts on....TOMORROW...I will be working through my whole place to get rid of things. I will place a donate(garage sale) box by the front door and on the 1st of the month I will get rid of ONE item. Then on the 2nd of the month I will get rid of TWO items, then on the 3rd it will be THREE items...I think you get the idea. The number of items you get rid of depends on the date of the month. Now for some getting rid of 10, 17 or 28 items in one day is a bit much as you might not even have that many items. But it could be articles of clothing to, you could even just get rid of one item for 30 days and see how that works out for you. Like I said, there are different variations of the 30 Day Minimalist challenge, so you might find that one works better for you. Now the idea behind decluttering is not to make room to buy MORE THINGS but to rid yourself of things you don't need or use FOREVER. Remember it can be a FREEING experience, if you let it but I'll be the first to admit that it is hard to do.
For those of you with children, I am sure you could turn it into a teaching/learning experience. Turn it into a game for family game night and go out for an edible treat. You could make it a goal to donate the items to a local family in need. The holidays are around the corner, you could share some holiday cheer with those who need it by giving those items which you don't need.

Anyway, decluttering is a goal that will benefit my, and your, life in more ways than one. I challenge ALL of you to accept and share your experience and/or what you have learned. At the end of the 30 Days I will check in and share my thoughts and what I have chosen to get rid of from my space.
GOOD LUCK!!
